Farewell and Mission Sending of Two SVD Missionaries: A Heartfelt Celebration in Bidibidi

Bidibidi Settlement, Uganda – 20 July 2025

In a deeply moving and faith-filled celebration, the Catholic community of the Sacred Heart of Jesus Chapel in Bidibidi Settlement gathered on Sunday, 20 July 2025, to bid farewell and send forth two beloved missionaries of the Society of the Divine Word (SVD): Fr. Andrzej, SVD, Mission Superior of the SVD Uganda Mission, and Fr. Andrew, SVD.

The occasion began with the Sacrament of Reconciliation and the recitation of the Holy Rosary, followed by a solemn Eucharistic Celebration presided over by Fr. Wojciech, SVD, Parish Priest of St. Arnold Janssen Parish in Ariwa. The liturgy was marked by deep gratitude and a spirit of unity, as hundreds of faithful—many of whom are refugees—gathered to honour the two priests who have served them with compassion and unwavering dedication for many years.

Following the Mass, the celebration continued with vibrant performances of traditional dances and vocal presentations from various parish communities, reflecting the rich cultural tapestry of Bidibidi. These artistic offerings symbolised the profound affection and appreciation the community holds for the departing missionaries.

As a token of gratitude, the faithful presented simple yet heartfelt gifts to Fr. Andrzej and Fr. Andrew. Through warm words and expressive gestures, they conveyed deep thanks for the priests’ pastoral presence and spiritual guidance amid the hardships of displacement. The legacy of their ministry has been one of hope, resilience, and deepened faith.

In his farewell message, Fr. Wojciech, SVD, offered these words of gratitude:

“We sincerely thank Fr. Andrzej and Fr. Andrew for their missionary zeal and faithful service to the people of Bidibidi. Your presence has been a true blessing. As you embark on your new mission to reopen the SVD presence in South Sudan, know that our prayers go with you.”

“Thank you, Fr. Andrzej, SVD, and Fr. Andrew, SVD. We wish you every blessing in your new mission. We remain united in prayer.”
